The Mirror Has Two Faces

The Mirror Has Two Faces

Bummer that Babs didn't direct more after this. She had a keen sense of how she wanted to use herself as a character moving through long and lopsided, but always compelling, dramas. In this one the mirror shows her first as a rumpled but witty and whip-smart professor of literature, and then as a snazzy and fashionable MILF. Jeff Bridges, meanwhile, gets to be a sexy math teacher. Movie magic! Anyway, this has some really weird ideas with regards to appearance and self-worth, but that thematic uniqueness is something it shares with her other two films. Along with all the other idiosyncratic touches, I'd argue she's an unsung auteur.
