Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Hunt for the Wilderpeople ★★★½

A whimsical tale of connection and longing, that, like a comforting hot water bottle, warms the soul. Enriched by some fine performances from it's leads (Neill's curmudgeon and Dennison's likable, amusing, troubled youth) and played with a light touch, it's weighty themes are mostly obscured by a facade of comedy and great one liners. Though, after a strong start it does start to flag, with most of the story played out. Seemingly unsure as to where to go, it strays more into absurdity and becomes more fantastical (or, I should say, majestical!), as it reaches its anticipated conclusion.
