Maniac Cop

Maniac Cop ★★½

"You always take a leak with a gun in ya hand?"

First time watch for this, and I recall seeing the cover art many a time on my frequent visits to the local video store. It most definitely 'does what it says on the tin', and sees a seriously homicidal 'lawman' on the rampage in New York. I was previously ignorant to to the admittedly decent cast that made for a nice surprise and includes Ash himself Bruce Campbell, Richard Roundtree and The Fog's Tom Atkins. Sam Raimi pops up in an uncredited role as a reporter too. Robert D'Zar plays the title character, and has serious presence - very statuesque and imposing. An incredible hulk of a man if you will.
The feeling of dread is palpable as no-name cast members are picked off, and it's accompanied by a cheesy but effective score. It has very soft, grainy look to the visuals typical of this sort of release form the 80's 'video nasty' era, but it kind of adds to it's b-movie charm. Not really one to recommend unless you're on a bit of a nostalgia trip, but I have to say, knowing the great Robert Davi leads the sequel, it's got me curious for the followup.
Oh. and you've gotta love that tagline - "You have the right to remain silent...Forever"
