This is a movie I was really looking forward to. I was in the very small minority that loved Man of Steel. So when this movie was announced 3 years ago, I just couldn't wait. Two of my favorite superheroes finally together on screen. 10 year old me would be screaming a running around the house in his Superman cape. So, understandably when this movie started getting bad reviews, I was worried. But after seeing the movie (several times by the time of this re-write) I thought maybe I wasn't seeing the same movie.
Now, don't get me wrong. In no way is this a perfect movie. It's has some very sloppy editing and it references far too many things without offering proper explanation. Making it near inaccessible to the average moviegoer. But, it is no where near as bad as a what it's been made out to be.
I really enjoyed the slow build to the climax of the movie. Seeing Ben Affleck as Batman...wow, he may just be the best Batman we've had yet. His presence, action scenes, and acting were just great. His Bruce Wayne is clearly over the edge. This is the first interpretation of the character where he's shown to be kind of mentally unstable.
Henry Cavill plays a more subdued Clark Kent this time around. The world is afraid of him and he's lost for what to do. No matter how hard he tries, or how many people he saves, the world just can't come to fully trust him. He begins to question if his father was right. Maybe the world isn't ready for him. And this character arc, while not as prominent as I would've liked, was compelling to me. I wanted to see more of the Superman who doesn't have all the answers, doesn't know what to do.
The visual effects were great, the score was amazing (Is She With You is one of the best character scores I've ever heard.) In the end it was a good movie that needed more story and a better editor.
Hopefully Suicide Squad will knock it out of the park for me.
