I fell in love with this film from the beginning. I loved the dialogue, I loved the cinematography, I loved the directing. One thing I did not love was going back to the "mentally ill guy stabs someone" well, à la The Village, but I admit that's a sore spot for me personally that might not bother other people as much. And it's not exactly a Shyamalan-specific problem to portray mentally ill characters as dangerous/violent. It just kind of stuck in my craw. Other than that, I'm just 100% on board, I thought it was awesome.
I probably can't say anything that hasn't been said better by a lot of people before but this is quite possibly one of the greatest movies ever made. The Red Shoes ballet sequence is jaw-dropping in its mastery. Anton Walbrook gives an absolute rager of a performance. Would give it a hundred stars if I could.
Absolutely luminous specimen of Technicolor and beautiful cinematography. A bit of a gear shift movie as the question of whether Sister Clodagh can handle running a convent gives way to the drama of Sister Ruth's madness. Some uncomfortable brownface I would be remiss not to mention. Overall, having gone in with no expectations, I was dazzled. They truly do not make them like this anymore.
