Frances Ha

Frances Ha ★★★★

My Baumbach cherry has been popped. And I can see how that could be a gay joke.

Uber-pretentiousness can be a very irritating thing (and Frances Ha literally drowns itself in it) but for some reason this Noah Baumbach mumblecore, part gloomy character piece about directionless twentysomethings and part upliftingly amusing comedy-drama about directionless twentysomethings, is different. Maybe it's the authentic scripting or co-writer Greta Gerwig's wooden (but so damn endearing) central performance that elevates the film from slight meh-fest to enjoyable yeah-fest but it is bettered and thank God. Sam Levy's beautiful B&W cinematography is crisply shot and adds yet another layer to the depressing side of the film. I like it.
