Say what you want about the undercooked romance between Tony and Maria (though I suppose that’s more the fault of William Shakespeare than Robbins & Wise), but this is both a top-notch musical with brilliant performances, music and cinematography and an undeniable, unequivocal masterpiece, which brims with style, musical cognisance and deep, dark-coloured reds.
Random note but Baby John interests me as a character, far deeper than his side note of a role... Perhaps dealing with his own sexuality and place within the Polish-American Jets gang in mid-1950’s Upper West Side New York... I want a character study!!
