In both of their trials they claim something along the lines of “So, my only crime is being friends with a mouse/bear?!?!”
Except...the judge just listed all of their crimes. And they included robbery and general mayhem.
That muddies the message of the film a little bit. A cynical view would be that the characters are intentionally deflecting from their actual crimes.
The film is surprisingly cyclical, actually. The whole idea of two partners, one that runs the candy store and the other that replaces teeth, are cooperating to make money is deeply cynical.
As far as animation goes, I loved the way things came into view, or maybe even into focus. The film opens this way, slowly revealing the image out from a center focal point. But it does this several other times to focus the attention in a certain area.
