Matt Wood’s review published on Letterboxd:
One of the reasons I watch older films is to trace back some of the inspiration for modern films. Normally that requires drawing some parallels, but it turns out that in the giant monster genre most people just remade Godzilla.
This is the first time for me where so many character archetypes and so much plot structure feel completely intact between the original and the modern.
I was expecting a much simpler film focused largely on create effects. But, we mostly got a character driven story. It was melodramatic, but it was also easy to enjoy.
I loved the miniatures and the cinematography to convey scale. I did not love, however, Godzilla’s head. That definitely didn’t seem right. I’m interested to see if that improved in the next one.
