Hedwig and the Angry Inch

I was really moved by John Cameron Mitchell's performance. There is a moment in one of the last musical scenes where Hedwig pauses for a moment before picking up the microphone. It felt so profound and so real it could have been a documentary.

I know the show continues to tour and different performers have taken on the role of Hedwig. I'm skeptical, though, that anyone could embody the character as well.

The relationship between Hedwig and Tommy felt predatory to me, which really made me less empathetic for that aspect of the story. And the definitely abusive relationship with the bandmates (holding passports!) also meant I wasn’t cheering for Hedwig in that aspect either.

That kept me at a distance and I think caused me to connect less with Heswig’s struggle, although it doesn’t invalidate that struggle.
