Mon Oncle

Having just seen Holiday I felt like I had my expectations in line, but this felt like a pretty big jump!

I love the layering in the frames. There is often more than one place to watch which turns what otherwise would be a passively pleasant experience into an active one.

He also telegraphs where each gag will go. They’re not normally random, they build. Since you know where things are headed it can carry similar tension to a horror film where you know what’s going to happen, but when?!

That active engagement is what I’m looking for in films and not something I generally get from comedies.

The thing that got me the most: The guy who was on a tour of the factory that he didn't even really want to do standing on top of the vibrating platform just trying to maintain his dignity. I still think about him.
