How frustrating. This short-sighted tale of Britney Spears' life, built around tabloid covers, papparazzi footage and hearsay, eventually allows a platform for some seemfully genuine and well-intended stances to be shared; but the documentary fails to bring a voice that convinces of its truthfulness. A kaleidoscope of various partial perspectives and interests, it leaves Britney Spears' public image as distorted and distant as before.
It's earnest, it's raw, it's oftentimes smart, its writing shut tight in a loop of hurt, resilience, and struggle for justice/revenge. It's filled with rage and creativity. It's candy and sour and wonderfully lead by Carey Mulligan's angel face. It sugarcoats visually so it can get away with the horrid violence it wraps up. It's straightforward, funny and touching. I don't need much more.

"Bertolucci was inspired by his own sex dreams" "the sodomy scene was not in the script and was Brando's idea" "Schneider was 19 at the time" "Bertolucci said about Schneider 'the girl wasn't mature enough to understand what was going on"............ this is quite a Mess of a movie. and it's boring too.... what's with the seventies and perverts putting their odious fantasies on film and all that shit being perceived as Art
The extended cut is so much greater: flowing in its labyrinthic narrative, clearer when it comes to the motives and definition of the characters, less cryptic and deliciously funnier.
It feels so simple, so clear and beautiful to watch this version that I don't think I'll ever watch the first version again - and I think those who never saw the movie just need to discover it with this extended cut to grasp it all in one take and see Park Chan-Wook's genius unfold the story so comfortably.
