Ere I am JH’s review published on Letterboxd:
Doctor Sleep pleasantly surprised me -- at first. In an age of un-asked-for sequels and prequels, I appreciated that it was a new story set in the Shining universe, and not merely a stealth remake. Could have done without the literal magical black man character in a 2020 movie, however.
So it was a disappointment when the last act indulges in full-on fan fiction, especially so soon after Steven Spielberg's superficial recreations of the Overlook Hotel in Ready Player One. There's an argument to be made that as Ready Player One is to Stanley Kubrick, Doctor Sleep is to Stephen King. Discuss.
