Having recently watched this and Rings (2017) in close succession, I can't help but think about how quickly & easily franchises can disappear up the backsides of their own premises.
The original Purge became more than a mere riff on the home-invasion horror movie subgenre by playing with white-hot 21st century topics like income inequality and unjust policing. While this sequel does flirt with addressing white privilege, it's overly concerned with the mechanics of its illogical premise. Ultimately a failure of the imagination.
