Brigsby Bear ★★★★

Brigsby Bear is maybe a little too self-aware about its peculiar & charming quirkiness, but it never dwells long enough on sentimentality to become uncomfortably precious. Co-written by star Kyle Mooney, and directed by Dave McCary, the movie does a nice job of exploring the damage done by presumptive empathy -- everyone is so preoccupied with their own stridently developed and emotional ideas about James' experience that they overlook his very different priorities and needs. It's an idea that has a lot of relevance in today's world of hyper-aggressive, self-centered care-broadcasting, and is delivered with unwavering sweetness and lightness of touch.
