movie vs movie. Annihilation vs Pan's Labyrinth
Unlike Annihilation, I actually enjoyed Pan's Labyrinth a lot more with my second watch. Del Toro's original fairy tale has a bit of a slow start, but it more than makes up for it with its unique, nightmarish fantasy world and emotional storyline.
The visuals really shine here, but I think the writing and acting of its protagonist also deserve a lot of praise. Ofelia is a fairly average child character, and there's definitely many others out there like her in children's fantasy films, but she's instantly likable and her childlike nature makes her belief in fairies and other mythical creatures believably endearing to those around her in the "real world."
