I unabashedly adore the Amblin-esque qualities pulsating throughout the first two thirds of this film. From the main family punking the seven feet in seven hours investigator to the way they introduced religious subtext through the dead bird to the small character moments establishing the playful tone without compromising the horrific stakes to the numerous iconic images introduced without stepping on each other's toes, Poltergeist subverts typical horror expectations completely while simultaneously delivering a genuinely terrifying climax. It never transcends its material, but Spielberg delivers one hell of an entertaining ride that makes me furious he never returned to the genre.... Oh, yeah, the chaotically inclined Tobe Hooper directed this masterfully structured movie, rightttt.
