I pressed play on this movie to kill 90 minutes thinking I’d never seen it, but once I predicted a half-dozen lines of dialogue within the first 10 minutes I realized I watched it as a 10-year-old on HBO.
2012 isn’t the worst Emmerich film with a year in its title, Stargate isn’t his most insultingly historically-inaccurate effort, and Independence Day: Resurgence is somehow not his worst movie overall.
I watched this one time 14 years ago and hated it, and if you think I’m ever putting myself through that again simply to log it on letterboxd you’re out your goddamn mind.
Not a single character in the film does the right thing, or the decent thing, or even the comprehensible thing.
That being said, John Krasinski gives a genuinely good and charming performance? Like way better than anything a film like this deserves? Extra half a star.
