Plot is whatever but the chemistry between Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts is insane. President Clinton probably made the two sign a contract in secret to never team up in a film again because they’d be too powerful; they already had the guts to release this alongside The Phantom Menace in 1999...
Still brilliant. The only people upset Anthony Hopkins won Best Actor are the ones who haven’t seen this film. Masterful editing, a beyond-impressive directorial debut, and engaging production design.
Deserving of its Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar, too. Some funny dialogue bits, but more importantly the structure plays out like a horror film, not knowing what’s real or how much time has elapsed.
If you still haven’t seen this film, you should; Hopkins’ performance will be cited for years to come.…
