Unfortunately suuuuper conflicted on how I feel about this one. One one hand, it’s the most stylishly-made and horror-centric MCU feature to date, all thanks to man, myth and legend Sam Raimi; on the other, it’s a near-complete catastrophe in terms of pacing, plot and dialogue. As the title suggests, it is a very strange film, but not always necessarily in the right ways…

Just as I suspected things would be, the best parts of this movie were the things…

Well damn…I think this might be one of my new franchise faves. Tightly-paced with awesome kills and a goofy 3D gimmick that, even when viewed in 2D, adds a whole ‘nother layer to the entertainment value. Plus, even though Harry Manfredini always delivered great musical arrangements for this series, the man outdid himself with the groovy, dance floor worthy opener he whipped up for this installment.

I honestly forgot how lovable Dana Kimmell was in this! Amy Steel’s Ginny will always…

Demonia is hands down the most mundane and uneventful film I’ve seen from director Fulci yet; about 20 minutes of fun ideas patched together by about 65 minutes of droll filler. However, I’d be remissed to not give credit where it’s due: despite the general blandness, this shit is funny as all hell sometimes.

You’ve got human-shaped sandbags flopping into tiger pits, the most painfully rhythmless campfire singers ever, a butcher being assaulted by the contents of a possessed meat freezer…

My final stop on (unfortunately) this year’s only title date celebratory Friday the 13th marathon.

The Final Chapter is another stupendous addition to the franchise; truly a rung above its predecessors in regard to raw filmmaking quality. From dialogue to exposition, there’s a bit more authenticity and unique voice behind the writing, all while still somewhat maintaining that farcical, absurdist edge the series is known for. It’s also pretty damn nice-looking in just about every visual respect — the camerawork,…

Yup, still the same ol’ grassroots slasher I know and love…but oh, how much more magnificent it could’ve been with its kills left uncut. They’re all present in the Shout! Factory blu’s special feature, and lemme tell ya, they. are. glorious.

Nonetheless, Part II still has my second favorite Jason design (the #1 spot goes to Part VII) and Ginny, the best and brightest final girl of the whole series, played by the ever-so-lovely Amy Steel. The rest of the cast is endearing, too, and the atmosphere perfectly matches that the first film, and amplified even further with much more eye-catching cinematography. Gooooood shit.

Well, this would’ve been a-okay coming from just about anyone else in the horror scene, but coming from an established director like Edgar Wright, I felt it was kind of a let-down.

It is a rather nice-looking feature for the most part, and Thomasin McKenzie is so cute it should be illegal, but the story it tells is missing the exhilarating edge of the director’s former films. Plus, the editing in this film all seemed superficial; it made you say…
