Drew Ehrler’s review published on Letterboxd:
Very impressive, but unfortunately it’s just not what I’m looking for.
WWI is largely untapped. There is a great movie to be made about it, but too many war movies gloss over or completely ignore the forces that make wars happen. 1917 is about a battle being stopped rather than fought, which is interesting, but it’s single-shot style works to maximize the valor in the two soldiers’ actions. And, unfortunately, its scope is much too narrow for it to be effective as a portrayal of the Great War.
Coming directly from an astounding movie like Little Women to this is more than a little disappointing. 1917 is a big spectacle that hides almost nothing under its impressive camera movement.
