    Oz Perkin's retelling of the fairy tale is a good but not outstanding horror flick that's a head above the usual January horror schlock but isn't exactly a classic. The cinematography and art direction are top notch and Sophia Lillis as Gretel and Alice Krige as the Witch are both fantastic.

    The occasional bursts of neon lights and the unconventional synth score as well as the at times dreamy and hypnotic atmosphere bring to mind cult classics such as Beyond…

    Mandy breaks down the barriers between "high" and "low" art, merging the influences of pulp icons such as John Carpenter and Dario Argento as well as art house maestros such as David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick while still creating it's own psychedelic, blood caked nightmare vision. Despite having scenes that are as over the top and absurd as a chainsaw duel and the infamous "Cheddar Goblin" scene, there is still a tremendous sense of sadness and pain throughout this film.…
