Dan Short’s review published on Letterboxd:
I never read anything about this movie but heard it was good and saw the director’s previous film Phoenix (which was great). As I was watching, I was confused because it was set in present day but was playing out like a Nazi invasion film. Afterwards, I read that the film was based on a 1944 novel but was purposely placed in an undetermined present time to show how timeless the story of fleeing a fascist country can be. In the age of Trump, Brexit, and the continuous leaning into extreme conservative ideals, this movie feels extra frightening.
