A Field in England ★★½

Credit to the lovely black & white cinematography, witty dialogue and keen sense of open-aired claustrophobia, but it's hard to genuinely like Ben Wheatley's bizarre treatise on the Aguirre-like fate befalling a group of deserters from the English Civil War who fall in with a nefarious alchemist and get high on shrooms. The whole thing is so dense and never really finds a groove after its intriguing initial setup; frankly, the aesthetic ingredients might well have been better suited for a straightforward war movie.
