Please excuse me for the indulgence but one of the proudest ever moments in years of amateur culture writing came when I finally sat down to write about a film I've loved for literally my entire life and started to speculate on connections between its blunt, unsentimental language and that of Where the Wild Things Are, which prompted me to do some googling and discover that Maurice Sendak wrote an entire op-ed about Pinocchio for the Post in 1988! It feels genuinely strange to be verifiably right about something once in a while! Here is Sendak's excellent essay, here is my own piece.
My DVD of this is so old that it doesn't properly tag the video as non-anamorphic and I had to change my TV's settings to correctly screen it it in 4:3. Probably time for an upgrade!
