The Testament of Dr. Mabuse ★★★★

The simultaneously shot French version with different actors, which is on Letterboxd separately as The Last Will of Dr. Mabuse, but I’m choosing to mark it as the same title here. It’s much shorter while keeping the story pretty much intact; cutting down the tonedeaf romantic subplot is beneficial, but the rapid pace and incomplete, awkwardly cut scenes serve to make the story inorganic and incoherent... almost Spies-like, actually. I’d still rate this version four stars if it were all we had; so many rich ideas in it. But there’s no reason to see it in lieu of the German film except as a curiosity.
