this was such a joy for me in every respect, but I also cried for significant portion.

so many people i adore were featured in this film and i feel blessed to have seen this festival footage before I die. Stevie, Nina, The Staples Sisters, Sly, Gladys- all people I listen to every day. Those canted shots. THE CLOTHES. A really chubby baby being lifted into the air!

When they spoke of Nina Simone and the way she exuded both fierce empowerment and mourning felt like a wonderful way to sum up the film as well. How could something so beautiful be forgotten?

i always think about how i often feel less educated than my male counterparts- about movies, books, etc., because i wasted so much time growing up watching fucking youtube videos on how to do makeup or looking at girls who were prettier than me on tumblr. this movie does a pretty good job of the ways women waste their own time in patriarchal society.
