So. Obviously, Joaquin’s performance is outstanding and the highlight of the entire film. The cinematography and look and everything visual about the film was most pleasing to me because i’m hyper-fixated on 70s aesthetics right now (the Taxi Driver thing— I didn’t hate it.  I don’t think Todd Phillips is really someone of enough stature to take from a movie as iconic as that, but the parallels were there, so whatever).

As for the film... I just don’t think anything…

I overheard a group of people talking afterwards about Joker. The question was asked: What was the point of the film? The answer is simple: To make you smile.

In all seriousness, Joaquin murders it. You could make the case he has some of the biggest clown shoes to fill, since the iconic role of Joker has been legendary since the days of Cesar Romero. Throughout the film, no other actor even crossed my mind. That’s saying a lot. This…

This film throws you into a fire and watches you burn to a crisp for 2 hours. By the end you feel, not so much disturbed, but intimidated. The film, however silly the script is at times, feels bigger than you by the end. Joaquin Phoenix’s performance and Hildur Guðnadóttir’s score truly carry this film. Todd Phillips adds barely any originality in regards to the tone. People are gonna hate it for the wrong reasons, people are gonna love it for the wrong reasons. At the end of the day, I’m just a little bummed I saw it instead of Uncut Gems.

Interconnected humanism. Arguably Cameron's strongest in regards to his immaculate blend of tech fetishes, romantic sweep, high-concept ideas, and classical structure/discipline. A big brain and brawn and heart collage, and just plain ravishing adventure. Cameron is a pro at basic, fundamental mechanics; fluid, gripping, efficient exposition, gradual succession of set-piece intensity, sturdy characterization, and mixes of genre. "It's just Pocahontas!", they say. Excuse me, but does your precious Pocahontas (ignoring the common knowledge and reliance on the…

I really don't know what to think of this. The acting was excellent, the cinematography was gorgeous, the atmosphere was foreboding and impeccable, and a breakfast scene is one of the finest moments in 2014.

Yet, the rest is typical WWII fodder, with an overbearing score, cliche elements, a preachy script, and a soft ending bringing down the film as a whole.

Basically, when all is said and done, It's a solid war film, and while I was particularly impressed with the aura of disillusionment and foggy misery; the rest feels like leftovers from every "war is hell" film ever made.
