Boy Roarbison [fka Nag Champion]’s review published on Letterboxd:
Before I begin, I find it important to note that I was unfamiliar with the source material prior to seeing the film. I knew next-to-nothing of the characters and the story, aside from what my nerdy roommate Robert Mathison had been ranting about throughout the months prior.
What it lacks in the "acting" department, it more than makes up for with its no-holds-barred, flip-every-switch, pull-every-lever, balls-to-the-wall approach to fun. And that is exactly what this movie is; pure fun. The effects are masterfully done and the 3D is perfectly woven throughout the film to the point where I almost began to forget it was there, that's how immersive it is. I was there. I was pounding around the galaxy with Star-Lord and all the rest of them. The main cast of characters are beautifully fleshed out, even if a couple lines here and there don't exactly hit, and most of the ancillary characters are either well-written or superbly-acted.
But what impressed me most of all is that Guardians of the Galaxy has heart. Heaps of it. And James Gunn is terrific at shooting the more tender moments of the film, making them feel genuine. I hadn't expected to connect with these characters as much as I did.
And the rest you've heard: Chris Pratt is wonderful, Rocket & Groot are the show-stealers, Gamora is strangely hot, the music and the baddies are both perfect. Yadda yadda yadda. There's nothing else I can say that everyone else hasn't already. Bottom line, I bet you'll have a hard time finding a movie that's more fun than this for the rest of the year.
