I've been where Wendy's been, not exactly, I didn't decide to go across country on my own to Alaska, but I've taken some brave moves in my life and career choices. It's scary, and the fear and vulnerability that Michelle Williams conveys through Wendy is genuine and real.
Tying Lucy to the story shows that sometimes you have to let go of the people (or dog) you love to move on, and to do what's best for that other person (or animal :) ). Being a pet owner, I can't imagine separating myself from my pet, especially when they are the only constant in your life, so the pain she feels is also real.
*That cop/security guard is the nicest guy ever, when you find people like that during your travels it's like someone is looking out for you.
