Carol ★★★★½

It's a shame that this film was snubbed for best picture at this year's Oscars. Everything about this movie just came together so well and worked perfectly. The performances from Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are absolutely mesmerizing, two of the best I've seen from any movie in 2015. Blanchett is elegant and beautiful, filled with emotion and draws in the audience so well. Mara is restrained and subtle yet conveys quiet emotion in a way that makes you understand her feelings without a word even being said. The rest of the cast also stacks up particularly well (especially Kyle Chandler and Sarah Paulson).

From a technical standpoint Carol is a masterpiece. The cinematography is gorgeous, the period design and costume design are beautiful, and the direction from Haynes is subtle yet powerful. I also found the narrative to be quite compelling in a soothing and enticing sort of way. The romance is heartfelt, earned, and emotional. You truly feel grabbed by the world that is created and the characters that are depicted onscreen.

The only complaints I may have are minor and that would be with the pacing feeling a little slow. But I thought the narrative structure was really well done, I particularly loved the non-linear aspect and shifting perspectives displayed at the start and end of the movie. All in all Carol is a wonderful film, one of the best romances in recent years, and one of the best movies of the year.
