Maggie Simpson in The Force Awakens from Its Nap 2021
“This is a rather lifeless outing.”
It’s hard to believe that it took three writers to hand David Silverman a note reading, “Maggie interacts with various Star Wars paraphernalia.”
I’m likely one of the few people to grow up as a Simpsons fan that is still following and enjoying it to this very day. It is a well-trodden pop culture cliché that the show has been unwatchable since Season 10-ish. As sure as people know that Maggie shot Mr. Burns,…

The Wild Bunch 1969
"When you side with a man, you stay with him. And if you can't do that, you're like some animal! You're finished! We're finished! All of us!"
I believe loyalty to be the most overrated of all ostensible virtues. All it really requires is for one to choose a side, vigorously defend it, and never stray from this unbreakable commitment. No matter the factors external of this allegiance. One can hardly criticize standing by a longtime ally in a time of…

Nathan for You: Finding Frances 2017
“Now if anyone ever says that I’m not fun, or is uncomfortable hanging out with me, I can say… No, you’re wrong. I am fun, and it’s been scientifically proven.”

Nathan paying a woman simply to…

Can't Get You Out of My Head 2021
I’ve been grappling with how to review this one all fucking year. Honestly, it has been a Damoclesean sword lingering over all of my film activity. I’m putting a pin in any serious attempt at a review.
I will say that it left me feeling a little cold and unfulfilled. Perhaps I was naïvely expecting prophesy? Also have to mention that the wildfire drive that opens episode three may be the most arresting moments in any Curtis film to date.…

Lenny Cooke 2013
My recent 30th birthday felt more like a funeral than anything else. Something about that number just feels like the death of all youthful promise. I never possessed anything quite so special as Lenny Cooke, but I certainly had the tools to be something much more than I am. I've spent the subsequent months somberly eulogizing my life. A eulogy never feels like it amounts to much, even for a rich, full life. Watching Lenny's own 30th birthday party felt…

Wake in Fright 1971
“You don’t like The Yabba?!”
I'm an Australian who left at the first chance I had, after experiencing a lifetime of social and cultural disconnect. This film fucking gets it!People are very quick to talk about how friendly Australians are. That’s not quite true. Australians may be welcoming, but it is a forced complicity more than anything. An all-consuming service and devotion to a homogeneous culture.
Sure, you are free to express yourself as you wish... within a very…
