The Babadook ★★★★½

Jennifer Kent has made a film which really does make one's skin crawl. Based around the terrifying notion of a monster from a children's book coming to life, The Babadook is a sinister creation - not unlike Freddy Krueger - who will destroy your life once you let it in. Essie Davis and Noah Wiseman are sensational in the central roles. Essie brings to mind Mrs. Pamela Voorhees from Friday the 13th. The sound is chilling, especially the sound of the Babadook itself. The sound of it saying it's own name will make you writhe in terror. Jennifer Kent should be applauded for making such a fantastic horror movie, in an age where they are becoming too far and few between. She is a woman who obviously knows her horror, Nightmare on Elmstreet, Firday the 13th, The Exorcist... are all at play here. However it's her knowledge of original horror which really impressed me; Nosfertu, Méliès' Le Manoir du Diable...
