    Ichi the Killer

Takashi Miike’s 2001 film 'Ichi The Killer' is about as over the top and perverse as cinema can possibly get. A true Frankenstein’s monster of film, bringing together aspects of horror, comedy, gangster, murder-mystery, torture-porn and exploitation. It can also arguably be seen as one of the most - if not *the* most - depraved movies ever made, with images of intense violence, torture, sadomasochism, rape and the surreal berating the viewer for the entirety of its 2-hour run-time. Not…

There’s so much more to hitman films than just copious amounts of violence. Films about assassins and contract killers contain within them the perfect narrative opportunities for explorations into moral ambiguity, the lengths people are willing to go to for a pay-check, an insight into corrupt institutions and governments, and putting a spotlight on the constant desire for the excesses of life. The crowning example of this sub-genre, in my opinion, lies in George Armitage’s 1997 cult-hit, Grosse Pointe Blank.…

Really solid! No way near as stupid or all out action as I had assumed it would be... It tells a genuinely tragic story in a more than satisfying way. Yes, it has a slight air of 80's cheese that a few action films from this era seem to have, but the serious and quite affecting story stop this feeling from going too far.

Also, we watched the alternative ending on YouTube afterwards and Jesus CHRIST is it brutal... Not…

VERY refreshing. By far and away my favourite thing in the MCU - primarily due to the fact that they seem to avoid the MCU as much as they possibly can. Yes there are hints of fan service here and there, but nothing that alters the story in any major sense. I probably would've turned it off if Doctor Strange had shown up for instance.

The creators successfully managed to make characters I previously didn't give much of a damn…

Quite possibly one of the most experimental films I've ever seen... Close-Up basically desconstructs everything film is, has been, and ever will be, blurring the line between reality and fiction to a point that genuinely makes me question my relationship with art.

    Absolutely essential viewing.

Oh so THIS is how people felt in 1999 when they watched The Phantom Menace???

All kidding aside, this is genuinely one of the most disappointing cinematic experiences of my life - and YES hyperbole is appropriate here. I've enjoyed the Disney-era of Star Wars well enough so far, and i absolutely ADORED The Last Jedi, but this film felt like it's sole reason for existing was to fix the "mistakes" of previous films, rather than feel like one on…
