Rewatched by Tony
Ender's Game 2013
Bit of an odd one this one. I felt it was slow, but compelling. It was both too long, and too short. While it seemed to go on for ages, I don't feel we got to see much of anyone and would have enjoyed some long periods with Ender in the various stages of his training.
Asa Butterfield's Ender was very good, and considering he was in every scene, he certainly earned his money.
I think it's fair to say that with an adaptation you're always going to lose some material, but there's so much extra depth in the book that the film struggles to create a narrative that feels complete.
Despite that, it's visually compelling, interesting and worth watching.
One final comment - the overall impact of the film relies very heavily on not having read the book, and not having been told about how the book plays out. If you do know (and I did), then the lack of impact is felt very keenly, due to the narrative issue. If you don't know - perhaps the movie works better.
