if Citizen Kane is like a very elegantly staged theater play with lots of showy cinematic techniques, Touch of Evil is like this incredibly greasy, lurid 50's b-movie that also somehow happens to be just as immaculately made. Orson Welles goes from sexless boy genius to your problematic uncle. is it better than Citizen Kane? i think so. esp after my third or fourth viewing. the great filmmaking goes far beyond the famous opening sequence also. i love this mode of Orson Welles.

completely unhinged and ridiculous from start to finish. so much action and quick handheld shots that the movie felt like it was two times the length, in both good and bad ways. at times it feels like a goofy kids movie with lots of slapstick humor that is very ridiculous and hit-or-miss and then at other times it's over the top gory with weird body horror elements or contains edgy jokes. overall very entertaining and stylish though.

i feel sorry for anyone who still thinks 25+ years later that this is a bad movie, or a "so bad it's good" movie - it's very, very far from either. maybe it's time to stop defining yourself by the critical consensus of puritanical empty-headed 90's male critics who mostly just suck at the teat of Hollywood. the fact that this movie isn't viewed as just as sharp a satire as Robocop or Starship Troopers, when it's actually even better…
