    Cléo from 5 to 7

    ★★★★½

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

"i think my fear is gone.
    i think i'm happy"

it's difficult to believe that someone who was so influential to myself and many others could just be gone. i wish i could've told Agnès how much she meant to me as a woman, aspiring filmmaker, and human being who strives to be even remotely as empathetic as she was. obviously i'll never get to shake her hand, but i think seeing this film on the big screen is the…

  • Gloria Bell

    Gloria Bell

    ★★★½

My first official piece for The Simple Cinephile (Gloria Bell review) was published this morning. You can read it here if you want!

And of course, a little excerpt:“Gloria Bell celebrates the female characters that are usually sidelined: the mother, sister, aunt, wife, or ex-wife, just to name a few. From the electric score to neon lighting, the film makes a point of proving that stories about older women can be just as interesting as the frequently captured youth-led venture into adulthood.”

  • Autumn Sonata

    Autumn Sonata

    ★★★★

charlotte embodies everything bergman hated. she refuses to dig into the unfamiliar. she avoids hurt, even if it has the potential to yield self discovery. charlotte is rigid, and therefore miserable. she cracks at the slightest disturbance. charlotte seems to emulate the results of the all too common abuse of christian ideals. everything to her is surface level, and her experiences allow her to stay blind. in autumn sonata, the blinder is an expansive knowledge of classical piano. in bergman’s childhood it was blind evangelism.

    Toy Story 4

    ★★★

there’s no need for this to exist, and the pacing and plot make that fact painfully obvious. i had a good enough time and shed a few tears, (you’ve got a friend in me!) but toy story 4 left no lasting impact on me.

(i was going to write more about why this was so disappointing, but i’m really depressed right now and i don’t have the energy)

    Thoroughbreds

    ★★★½

i don’t want to see, smell, taste, or touch another tracking shot again for the rest of my life. thoroubreds had more than enough to last me a lifetime.
went into this hoping (if not expecting) to have my breath taken away. there’s some great dialogue and chilling moments, but my enjoyment level of thoroughbreds ultimately comes down to personal preference. it’s well paced and fills the runtime, but this story isn’t interesting enough to me personally to warrant anything…
