Though much praise is directed towards filmmakers who can transform film into an “active” experience, it’s perhaps even harder to turn the medium into an engagingly “passive” one-- and that’s precisely what Edward Yang does in Yi Yi. Shots through windows and doorways, subtle yet potent performances and an emotionally resonant, observational screenplay concoct a unique feeling of simply eavesdropping on someone’s flawed, eventful, meaningful existence. There’s a lot going on thematically within the three hours, a lot of narrative turns (albeit very little plot to speak of) and a lot of striking emotional beats, but perhaps ultimately Yang’s message is as simple yet essential as the ones and twos the film is named after. Truly, one of my favourites.
