Emil Woerner’s review published on Letterboxd:
What the fuck did I just watch? This thing is like a fetish movie mixed with a surrealist comedy mixed with psychological thriller mixed with simple documentary. Maybe it’s the nature of his stuff, but Fellini crafts a really formless film here, which makes a lot of sense. It’s like an experiment in style with subject matter he visited previously in La Strada and 8 1/2. I would say that because of the experimental narrative, fun story, fantastic first and last fifteen minutes, and genuinely terrifying set of white on black color compositions of these clowns - which are some of the scariest shots in movie history, it at least gets an 8. Maybe higher if I keep coming back to it. This was Fellini at his most insane that I’ve seen, and I’m happy he lusted to keep getting stranger.
