    Beyond the Black Rainbow

Panos Cosmatos, it seems, likes to take a simple plot and bury it under several layers of surrealism to transform it into something unique and memorable. Beyond the Black Rainbow is, at heart, a cautionary tale about drugs and how bad they are, but the way it's presented - like an old 70's sci-fi with some 80s retro-ness mixed in - leads to one heck of an experience. A brilliant horror film that is absolutely drenched in a creepy atmosphere even before the spooky stuff starts. I love how immersive it all is as well, with some of the ghostly encounters being so well done that you almost forget you're watching a man interacting with ghosts. And crazy Jack Nicholson will always be scary.

Quite possibly one of the greatest animated films of all time, there's so much to love here. The animation is fluid and colourful, the concept is one of the most original I've heard of and the story is fun and emotional. I also love the sense of wonder you get, even from the get go as the characters investigate the mysterious tunnel and right to the end. Every time you think you've seen everything something you could never guess pops up. It all builds up to quite an experience like no other.
