Gummo ★★★★★

Life is beautiful. Really, it is. Full of beauty and illusions. Life is great. Without it, you’d be dead.

Gummo is America and Harmony Korine is cinema. I can’t think of a film that feels quite as real, and I mean “warts and all” type of real, than this one. It’s filthy and ugly and hilarious and beautiful and more human than any Hollywood melodrama could even dream of being. While these people may be crazy freaks, Harmony never antagonizes them, instead portraying them as victims of the nation’s indifference towards them and their dilemmas. It’s provocative and excessive enough to make a statement, but never to the extent where it all feels pointless. Fuck! This movie is amazing! Also, there’s a Like a Prayer needle drop in this! Fuckin’ Madonna, man! Beautiful.
