The Assistant

The Assistant ★★★½

The Assistant is ingeniously conceived and well-executed, with a modulated, knockout performance by Julia Garner who’s in almost every frame. But it’s chilly to a fault and never quite gathers up any dramatic momentum. Maybe the anti-climax and its denial of any catharsis is the point—and Garner helps it land harder than it really should—but I was still left wanting something more.

Oh, and did I say that men really suck? They do.
