The Dig

The Dig ★★★

When its luminous camerawork stays focused on Fiennes and Mulligan, The Dig is rich with story and emotion. But by its second half too many subplots begin to encroach and dilute its power.

Still, it’s great to see Mulligan getting back to an understated place in her acting and away from theatrical showboating (see Shame or Wildlife); while Fiennes, after an initial detour in leading man territory, is becoming an ace of the character actor bullpen.
