The Russia House ★★★½

sean connery juggles the expectations, all militaristic and corrupt, of the british, american, and russian governments, but eventually he falls for michelle pfeiffer and tom stoppard gets away with giving him the line “you are my only country now” just before they go to pound town. which, you know, is probably fair.

jokes aside, i enjoyed this, i enjoyed roy scheider playing a cia agent who admits that it is to the u.s. government’s advantage to keep tensions up with russia because it stimulates the weapons trade, and i especially enjoyed pfeiffer (who plays a russian book publisher) laughing at the english word “blurb.”
