“I grew up in a time when culture was passed along through objects. They were interesting because we could live among them. We could pick them up, and hold them in our hands”. This incredibly profound remark (from Askel, one of the main characters in the film) speaks volumes about the necessity of human connection. This is such a deeply moving (and wise) romantic comedy that explores the character dynamics and how every decision we make counts!
A quietly beautiful film about our desire to form a deeper connection to a place, to make sense of the past, and to feel the freedom and the joy of living in the process. You have to pay a lot of attention to really understand the nuances in the film, and perhaps subtlety renders the film slightly less impactful (to some) than it is supposed to be.
Wonderfully quirky tale of urban souls longing for meaningful emotional connections. With lots of hand-held camera works in crowded laneways, backed by classics such as California Dreamin’ and What A Difference A Day Makes, this is a story of people living in fantasies, waiting for love to come along to transform their morbid existence. Wong Ka Wai’s melancholic visual style hits me hard, again!
