Esther Rosenfield’s review published on Letterboxd:
a24 house style just absolutely sucks the life out of everything it touches. this entire movie is framed for instagram, a series of brutally color-corrected and dully symmetrical images, an aesthetic that enervates more than it excites. it's so one-note and glacially paced, over two hours spent drawing out the exact same beats again and again to no worthwhile end. and where the original story concerns the contradictions and traps inherent in upholding knightly ideals, this is just a story about a neurotic and horny guy who has to learn to be Brave. hard to see the point in even making this besides as more studio brand expansion, gawain just another character for film 101 students to buy posters and t-shirts of. i did admittedly enjoy joel edgerton as the gay lord (gaylord) but that's about it. nearly put me to sleep.
