    A superb central performance from Laetitia Dosch anchors this Parisian tale of a woman left unhinged and penniless after the breakup of a decade-long relationship. It's sometimes hard to watch because Paula is her own worst enemy at times, but the film has a pleasing honesty and a wry sense of humour underpinning its depiction of this flawed striver.

    Although this is a 2017 film, for us here in New Zealand it's a 2018 release, and for me it's hands-down the film of the year to date. While there may not be quite enough swearing for devotees of Armando Iannucci's other brilliant productions, the aftermath of the death of a brutal dictator is a perfect opportunity for a comedy of panic-riven paranoia and ruthless backstabbing among the Soviet hierarchy.     Finally after all the waiting, Interstellar is out and it's definitely worth seeing. Is it perfect? No, there are noticeable problems. A reasonably large chunk of the dialogue was undecipherable thanks to McConaughey's close-mouthed drawl and the cacophonous background noise, although that may have been due to the sound mix at the Embassy rather than the film-maker. The long Earth-bound setup drags somewhat and commits the ultimate sin of actually being boring in places - too much explanation is superfluous.…
