Supplants BODY OF LIES as the smartest film re: American/western engagement in the middle east. Great slow-burn spy thriller but also startlingly trenchant, subtle, informed commentary on foreign affairs -- which I assume comes form the Le Carre novel, but translating it to the screen as gripping drama, which Andrew Bovell's screenplay somehow manages to do, is a hell of an achievement. (Bovell also wrote the rather underrated EDGE OF DARKNESS.) Only complaint is the Germans-speaking-English-with-German-accents issue that I always whine about.
