Tragic stuff which only hits a little less hard because the class mores that prevent the protagonist from revealing her true socio-economic circumstances, don’t really govern contemporary society the same way they did 80 years ago - so her mortal charade seems woefully unnecessary to a modern viewer. On the other hand the casual nudity throughout the film seems list it is more modern than our current moment in 2018. Some very nice long Ophuls tracking shots. Some utter sadness and great little details and elevated emotions to be sure.
