    The story of Donald Crowhurst is fascinating and awful: it is a story of obsession, madness and terror as one man stares into the void. The astonishing ‘The Strange Last Voyage Of Donald Crowhurst’ captures this and is one of my favourite books. The story is complex and so the book (broadly) spends the first half focusing on the backstory and the second half focusing on Crowhurst’s state of mind once on the boat.     Three things:

    1. It is as though a teenager has seen a poster for a Dario Argento film, listened to a Sunn O))) record, then imagined a film out of those things. This is not a bad thing.

    2. Nicolas Cage has definitely seen that episode of Community about him.

    3. The man sat behind me at the Prince Charles Cinema, laughing for far too long in his hey-everyone-I-get-the-joke way at every violent moment, then repeatedly opening and consuming packets of crisps for the entire film, deserved the vengeance of Cage far more than the weird biker demons.
