    This improved a lot on the second viewing.

    The performances in particular are so subtle yet lived-in. The convincing sense of place, community, and character are what distinguish Disobedience from similar stories. Sebastian Lelio's world building is very methodical, very sincere. That sincerity has gotten Lelio into trouble with critics, but I'm not too mad at it. I get the trouble others have with the film's cliches, but Lelio, the Rachels, and Alessandro Nivola work together to elevate these people…

    The birth and fire sequences were everything. They felt like Fellini, in a good way. The rage at paternal abandonment was palpable and cathartic.

    I just felt like the heart of the movie was overly romanticized. The narrative was more a series of broad gestures that describe sketchy outlines of humanness, but none of these people --including Cleo-- felt fully realized.

    I didn't find all of the technical flourishes to be distracting, as others have. One of the film's strengths…
